Only three elected governors have been Black in the past 250 years, all of whom are Democrats and men. This group includes current Maryland Gov. Wes Moore.

However, this number may soon increase as there are now eight major party candidates on the ballot, including seven Black nominees and Moore. These nominees, consisting of both men and women from the Democratic and Republican parties, will be on November ballots. The historic significance of this moment is acknowledged by Gov.

Moore, who has become chair of the National Governors Association. Further information about these candidates and their campaigns can be found through additional sources.
